Beijing seeks to maximise national power rather than short-term growth

At a seminar hosted by NTU RSIS, Prof Tan Kong Yam, Emeritus Prof of Economics from NTU SSS, said China is prioritising its globally competitive technology economy over its weaker traditional economy, focusing on long-term national strength rather than short-term economic growth to prepare for strategic competition with the United States. He added that China is seeking to stabilise relations with the US to buy time for technological upgrading, while domestic support for strong leadership has strengthened amid ongoing US-China strategic rivalry.
