Air-conditioning and bubble tea – rethinking basic needs

In this op-ed, the writer said that Singapore leaders seem to have new ideas about unemployment benefits recently as the country faced economic structural problems.  The writer mentioned a study, led by NTU Assoc Prof and Provost’s Chair in Sociology Teo You Yenn and NUS Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy senior research fellow Ng Kok Hoe, which shows that in addition to continuing rising prices, the budget of local families has increased by 4 per cent to 5 per cent in the past three years.
