Age? Income? Type of housing? Which restriction is most likely to be relaxed first for single people buying homes?
Since taking office last year, Minister for National Development Chee Hong Tat has publicly stated at least three times in less than a year, including last month, that the government is exploring lowering the age threshold for single people to purchase HDB flats. With the National Day rally to be held on Sunday, is there any hope that this age threshold will be relaxed? NTU’s assistant professor of economics Chua Yeow Hwee believes that the 35-year-old age threshold can be reviewed, but it does not necessarily need to be significantly lowered. The government must still consider whether the supply is sufficient.
