Singapore has numerous schemes and programmes to encourage marriage and childbearing. Yet fertility trends have remained low because structural conditions and underlying principles have not shifted, thus not adequately addressing the complex and intertwining needs and desires people have regarding family, NTU Assoc Prof Teo You Yenn wrote in a commentary. Similarly, with inequality, more schemes won't work unless we address the fundamentals before advancing with more schemes and programmes.
