Seven opposition parties in Singapore announced plans last weekend to form a coalition, and extended an invite to former presidential candidate Tan Cheng Bock to lead them. In the aftermath of the May 9 polls in Malaysia, many speculated whether Singapore could follow suit, as opposition supporters in the republic hailed Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) victory as a sign of things to come. NTU political scientist Asst Prof Woo Jun Jie said that the PH alliance is also highly mature, compared with the “much less organised” coalition being proposed in Singapore.
