Observers interviewed pointed out that the Merdeka Generation Package can be seen as building the foundation for the next election as the package helps to appease the dissatisfaction of baby boomers about increasing living costs. Asst Prof Woo Jun Jie from NTU School of Social Sciences emphasised that the Merdeka Generation Package and the CareShield Life are targeted at baby boomers and young voters in Singapore. He said that the Pioneer Generation Package was in response to the voter’s dissatisfaction on the increase in living expenses in the 2011 election. Hence, the Merdeka Generation Package has a pre-emptive effect to help reduce public dissatisfaction.
