Academics, youth workers and observers said that social policies can be improved to better help those who are lagging behind. NTU’s head of sociology Teo You Yenn, who recently published a book on inequality, said children are not given ample time after they enter school to develop their talents and are instead sorted into different tracks through tests at fairly young ages. She said, "The kids who tend to be rewarded are those who have more exposure through parental coaching or tuition, and the kids who do not have these conditions are unable to catch up on cultivating the narrow skills that are tested.” She also said this needs to be recalibrated.
