The issue of rising costs and managing one's income is vexing Singaporeans enough that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong spoke about it during the National Day Rally. But economists said what some saw as nagging was, in fact, practical advice. NTU economist Prof Ng Yew Kwang noted that Trade and Industry Minister Chan Chun Sing, in a parliamentary speech in July, had also spoken about the cost of living, and how people's perception of the issue can be affected by "evolving aspirations and the potential gap between aspirations and anticipated means".
