Prof Rohan Gunaratna, an anti-terror expert from RSIS, said the ISIS network is still active in South Asia and Southeast Asia and has recently expanded. Assoc Prof Kumar Ramakrishna, the Head of Policy Studies and Head of National Security Studies Programme at RSIS, also pointed out that the suicide bombers are involved in at least two bombings, and are the usual tactics used by ISIS or Al-Qaeda. He added that the ISIS fighters who returned from the caliphate to Sri Lanka possibly played certain roles in yesterday’s attack. Asst Prof Walid Abdullah from NTU School of Social Sciences pointed out that the similarity between the attackers in this incident and New Zealand’s shooting is that they do not believe in the peaceful coexistence of different religions, and they believe there will be conflicts between civilisations.
