PM Lee: Universities should not pursue rankings but should focus on all-rounded education
At Nanyang Technological Institute (NTI) Class of 85's 30th anniversary dinner, PM Lee Hsien Loong said that a university's KPI should not be just based on rankings. Instead, a university's aim is to provide an all-rounded education for Singaporeans. NTI is the forerunner to present day NTU. More than 200 alumni attended the dinner at Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza last night, including the co-chairpersons of the dinner Ms Lee Bee Wah, MP for Nee Soon GRC and former MP Mr Inderjit Singh. Both PM Lee and NTU Provost Prof Freddy Boey spoke about NTU's past and current achievements in their speeches, including the fact that NTU Engineering is now ranked 6th globally. PM Lee also launched a new book "Thirty Years Hundred Stories" yesterday, which chronicles Singapore's engineering accomplishments. NTI alumni Dr Chua Chee Kai, who is also the Executive Director of the Singapore Centre for 3D Printing, said that many innovative sectors in the world have to do with technology, and universities need to attract the best students to study engineering so that they can bring the country forward.
