Research in Prof. Schuster’s Laboratory aims at charting the genetic structures of species at the genomic level, but also to map temporal and spatial patterns of organismal communities in the environment. Prof. Schuster has been a pioneer for next-generation sequencing and computational techniques. He has established new and robust methods for identifying microbial organisms from a wide variety of environments, but also for identifying genetic differences in various populations of higher organisms. His recent work has concentrated on the sequencing of human indigenous populations, in particular within the Asian continent. Furthermore, by developing novel protocols for ultra-low biomass analysis, Schuster’s laboratory recently advanced the field of bioaerosols. This novel technological platform allows conducting environmental surveillance studies that support ecological and public health aspects of outdoor and indoor environments.
