Introduction

With the advent of the digital age, the profile of the learners in the education system has changed dramatically. It is, therefore, imperative that educators evaluate their instructional strategies for designing learning and adapt existing practices to better meet the learning needs and preferences of the digital generation. This is to empower them to handle the complex challenges of a highly globalised and digitised world. Rethinking pedagogy for the 21st century is as crucial as identifying the new competencies that todays learners need to develop in this digital age. This course explores the pedagogies, learning environments, theories, perspectives and considerations on the use of various digital media technologies to develop 21st century competencies and skills in the learners.

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Advanced Pedagogical ​Practices
- FlexiMasters in Advanced Pedagogical ​Practices

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Pedagogical ​Practices (12 AU):

  • MTC902 Designing Curriculum: Theory and Practice (or MTC902A-C)
  • MTC903 Assessment for Learning: Theory and Practice (or MTC903A-C)
  • MTC904 Facilitating Learning in the Digital Age (or MTC904A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth course, MTC901 Nurturing Learners and Learning (or MTC901A-C), learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Advanced Pedagogical ​Practices (16 AU).

Course participants will:

1. develop a critical comprehension of the theoretical underpinnings of the need to adapt and adopt new pedagogies

2. critically explore and evaluate learner profiles and learning spaces

3. comprehend the changing nature of teacher role and the associated challenges

4. develop a deep understanding of the key tenets of designing learning using digital media technologies

5. apply these key tenets to design and develop learning experiences with digital media technologies and associated pedagogies

  • Transforming formal and informal learning spaces to accommodate digital age learning
  • Exploring the important role of educators as facilitators and strategies to actualise them
  • Designing for learning with digital media technologies and comprehending the theoretical underpinnings: a) Foster participation b) Personalise and customise learning c) Project and problem-based learning d) Encourage collaboration and communication e) Engage and motivate learners f) Cultivate creativity and innovation
  • Exploring and evaluating the affordances of digital media technologies, learning spaces and associated pedagogies with a critical view
