Introduction

This course guides participants in the analysis and evaluation of existing curricula and curriculum practices. This includes critical discussions of how educational objectives, subjects, programmes, and teaching approaches (e.g., differentiated instruction, formative assessment, inquiry-based learning, project-based learning, e-padagogy, etc.) are typically understood, selected, designed, and applied. Participants will explore the various factors and considerations that influence curriculum decisions and examine curricular consequences beyond those immediately related to explicitly stated educational objectives, such as the inevitable and often inadvertent shaping of teachers’ and students’ beliefs and attitudes about education and learning. They will come to appreciate curriculum designing as fundamentally a situated cognitive activity.

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Advanced Pedagogical ​Practices (12 AU):

  • MTC902 Designing Curriculum: Theory and Practice (or MTC902A-C)
  • MTC903 Assessment for Learning: Theory and Practice (or MTC903A-C)
  • MTC904 Facilitating Learning in the Digital Age (or MTC904A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth course, MTC901 Nurturing Learners and Learning (or MTC901A-C) , learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Advanced Pedagogical ​Practices (16 AU).

Through this course learners will:

1. Be able to understand the relationships between the various elements of curriculum.

2. Be able to critically analyse and evaluate the various factors and considerations that influence curriculum designing and enactment.

3. Be able to critically analyse and evaluate the various consequences of curriculum designing and enactment.

  1. The elements of curriculum
  2. Factors and considerations influencing curriculum designing and enactment
  3. Intended and unintended consequences of curriculum
  4. Identifying and interpreting curriculum issues within the classroom
  5. Curriculum designing as a situated cognitive activity
