Introduction

This course introduces curriculum design and development models and practices pertinent to the field of special education. Students will demonstrate the why, what and how of curriculum design and development. Effective teaching and learning requires a renewed focus on the unique needs of individual learners and an understanding of differentiated curricula and pedagogies to meet the needs of these learners.

This course aims to offer the knowledge and skills to develop appropriate curricula and instructional approaches to accommodate learners with diverse needs ranging from those with high support needs to those who are gifted and talented.

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Special Education (12 AU):

• MSE902 Human Development
• MSE911 Learning Disabilities

• MSE915 Assessment of Children and Youth with Special Needs

Upon completion of the fourth course, MSE913 Curriculum Design and Development, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Special Education (16 AU).

At the end of the course, students should be able to

  • describe theories and models of curriculum and the development of curriculum frameworks;
  • perform a SWOT Analysis of the current system in Singapore and of their own school;
  • understand the principles of Universal Design for Learning and utilize tools and resources to reach ALL learners;
  • design a short curriculum based on learning in the course.

This module covers 3 main areas:

  • the history of curricular development,
  • basic types of curriculum for students with special needs around the world,
  • the Singapore curriculum for special needs and how history, culture, needs, and goals impact that curriculum.

  • A teaching qualification such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Education and at least one year of teaching experience or
  • At least three years of teaching experience or other relevant working experience in education.
