Introduction
This course introduces students to the nature and cause of learning disabilities, and their assessment and intervention.
Students will also have the opportunity to examine the research literature on the effectiveness of various practices as well as learn about the issues and debates in the field. This course provides an in-depth study on learning disabilities to equip students with relevant content knowledge and selected intervention skills to work with learners with learning challenges.

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Special Education (12 AU):
• MSE915 Assessment of Children and Youth with Special Needs
Upon completion of the fourth course, MSE913 Curriculum Design and Development, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Special Education (16 AU).

On completion of this unit, students should be able to:
- Define learning disabilities and discuss the many signs and characteristics that often accompany these learning difficulties
- Discuss the most common types of learning disabilities and summarise the most commonly identified and treated learning disabilities
- Discuss academic placement challenges faced by schools and teachers
- Provide basic practical approaches for teaching students with learning disabilities

A teaching qualification such as the Postgraduate Diploma in Education and at least one year of teaching experience or at least three years of teaching experience or other relevant working experience in education OR Field experience in special education.
