Introduction

This course aims to empower participants to explore and reflect critically on key current and historical issues and trends underpinning the developments of early childhood education (ECE), and through this, to examine and discuss how ECE in the Singapore context can benefit from developments in the wider field, and yet stay relevant to its contextual demands.

This course is part of:
- Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Studies
- FlexiMasters in Early Childhood Education

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Early Childhood Studies (12 AU):

• MEC901 Child Development (0-8 years)
• MEC902 Issues and Trends in Early Childhood Education
• MEC903 Research Investigations in Early Childhood Education
 
Upon completion of the fourth course, MEC906 Curriculum Design and Development in Early Childhood Education, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Early Childhood Education (16 AU).

In this course, participants will be able to examine, discuss and reflect on the following: knowledge about children and childhood from which areas of investigation and research may emerge the importance and value of early childhood care and education the philosophy and goals of early childhood care and education which have informed policies, training and practices key issues and trends concerned with the care and education of young children, and the impact of changes in societal values and beliefs, both locally as well as globally, on the evolution of early childhood education and care their role in the provision of quality care and education of young children.

  • ‘Children’ and ‘Childhood’: Multiple Images of the Child
  • History, Theories & Models of ECE
  • Influences from Neurosciences
  • Developments of ECE in the Singapore Context
  • Current trends impacting quality of ECE in various aspects (e.g. play in ECCE, early years transition, etc.)
  • Advocacy, Ethics and Children’s Rights
  • A teaching qualification such as the NIE's Postgraduate Diploma in Education and at least ONE year of teaching experience OR

  • Diploma in Early Childhood Care and Education approved by the Early Childhood Development Agency, Singapore and at least THREE years of teaching experience in pre-schools.
