Introduction

This hands-on course aims to engage participants in examining the existing new media environment and provide an embodied new media experience for them. It addresses important, current issues in new media studies with in-depth discussion of popular perceptions/myths and implications to learning. Through the self-directed analysis of media content (critical media consumption) and production of media artefacts and participation in online communities (critical media prosumption), participants will gain a sense of new media culture and form their personal critique on the relationship between new media and 21st century learning for their refined practices.

Learners must complete the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Curriculum and Teaching (12 AU):

  • MCT902 Crafting the Curriculum
  • MCT921 Theory and Practice of Authentic Assessment
  • One of the following electives:
    • MCT904 Understanding Teachers and Teaching: Theory and Practice
    • MCT912 Curriculum and Programme Evaluation
    • MCT913 Differentiating Curriculum and Teaching for Diverse Learners
    • MCT935 New Media and 21st Century Learning

Upon completion of the fourth course, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Curriculum and Teaching (16 AU).

At the end of the course participants will be able to:

  • Have first-hand experience in authentic new media practice
  • Explore design considerations to enhance students learning with new media
  • Reflect and critique on new media and 21st century learning

Topics covered includes:

  • Concepts of new media and learning
  • Critical media consumption and learning
  • Critical media prosumption (creation) and learning
  • Critical media prosumption (participation) and learning
  • Design considerations in 21st century learning with new media
A teaching qualification such as the NIE’s Postgraduate Diploma in Education or equivalent portfolio of professional learning certification/diploma in education practice.

At least two years of experience in teaching or professional experience in educational contexts.
