Introduction

Global developments in the teaching of Chinese require educators working in this area to further their understanding on the latest trends in of the teaching of Chinese as a second language. In addition Chinese teachers should possess the ability to apply the latest methodologies and theories in the innovation of their pedagogy, on top of having a strong foundation in their knowledge of the Chinese llanguage and its linguistics. This course focuses on the theories and methodologies in the teaching of Chinese as second language. The syllabus includes the teaching of Chinese phonics, characters, lexicon, grammar, rhetoric and other related knowledge. The course consists primarily of project-based learning. Depending on the needs of the class, the course instructor has the flexibility and discretion to plan and customize the teaching materials in order to underscore important learning points and to reinforce difficult concepts.

- FlexiMasters in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language

Learners must complete any three of the following courses to attain the Graduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language (12 AU):

  • MCL902 Topics on Chinese Language and Its Teaching (or MCL902A-C)
  • MCL905 Character and Citizenship Education and its Pedagogy in Singapore Primary Schools (or MCL905A-C)
  • MCL910 Chinese Language Testing and Assessment (or MCL910A-C)
  • MCL911 Application of Information and Communication Technologies in Teaching and Learning of Chinese Language (or MCL911A-C)

Upon completion of the fourth set of courses, learners will fulfil the AU requirements to attain the FlexiMasters in Teaching and Learning Chinese Language (16 AU).

Knowledge of language ontology is the basis of teaching Chinese as a second language, and the pre-requisite to nurture students' ability to listen, speak, read and write. The objective of this course is for students to gain a thorough understanding of the latest theories in the research and teaching of Chinese as second language, and to combine the practice of Chinese language teaching in Singapore, to discuss some of the challenges and topics related to Chinese language ontological knowledge. This is to further strengthen and deepen students' grasp of the theory and to improve students’ ability to make good use of the theory to conduct innovative research. After taking this course, students will be able to use the theory and methods to promote the development of local Chinese language teaching.

Based on the principles of linguistics and language teaching, this course is divided into a number of topics. Instructor can choose the topics flexibly according to students' background and teaching goals to highlight the key points and strengthen their applicability.

1. Chinese phonetics and Chinese characters teaching:

  • Scheme of the Chinese Phonetic Alphabet and its teaching
  • Using Chinese phonetics to assist the teaching of Chinese vocabulary, grammar and Chinese characters 
  • Chinese phonetic input method and its application
  • Using Chinese phonetic to assist the teaching of Chinese language skills
  • The common errors of Chinese phonetic learning and its teaching strategies
  • The nature and features of Chinese characters and their influence on second language learning
  • The differences between teaching Chinese characters in L1 and L2
  • Techniques of teaching Chinese characters for Chinese as a second language
  • Information Technology and Chinese characters teaching
  • The common errors of Chinese characters learning and its teaching strategies
2. Chinese vocabulary and grammar teaching:
  • Contemporary Chinese vocabulary research and teaching theory
  • The differences between overseas Chinese and Mandarin vocabulary and its teaching
  • The application of Chinese semantic cognitive motivation in Chinese teaching 
  • Chinese learning dictionary and Second Language vocabulary acquisition
  • The development of contemporary Chinese grammar and vocabulary Teaching 
  • Grammar teaching of Chinese parts of speech
  • Chunk theory and teaching Chinese phrases
  • Multi perspective and Application of Chinese sentence pattern
  • Cognitive explanation of Chinese grammar
  • Common vocabulary and grammar error analysis in Chinese language teaching
 
3. Chinese Rhetoric
  • New Development of Chinese Rhetoric Research and Teaching
  • Language elements and teaching of rhetoric
  • Cognitive Principles and rhetoric innovation
  • Expression, acceptance and interaction : Rhetoric Teaching Design
  • Daily life language use and social rhetoric

All Courses are taught in Chinese. Participants with background and/or experiences in one or more of the following areas will better appreciate the course contents.

a. Education, or
b. Chinese Language-related fields or

c. Working experience in teacher professional development, continuing education and training or other relevant adult education

Participants are recommended to take the courses in the sequence A, B, and C as the contents of the latter courses build on the foundations of the earlier courses.
