Chair's Message

Welcome to the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, one of the three pioneering schools of Nanyang Technological University. Over the years, we have established ourselves as a top school that is highly ranked in the world by subject and discipline.

I took over as the Chair of the School since September 2023. I am excited to share with you some of the key points that make our school stand out in teaching and education, research and innovation, as well as making impact on the world.

In teaching and education at MAE, engineering fundamentals form the core but our curriculum allows students to broaden their scope through electives they can freely choose in areas of their interest. Our students are frequently challenged and stretched through projects, equipping them with the essential attributes needed for the future. The key attributes of our graduates include creative and innovative, motivated and focus, confident and outgoing as well as logical and determined with a strong work ethic.

For example, our students design and build their own energy efficient cars, and then participate in races such as the Shell Eco-Marathon, where they have consistently done very well over the years, bringing pride and glory to themselves, the School and the university.

In research, we have attracted large grants that allow us to establish research centres on strategic areas of interest to industry and Singapore. These areas include 3D Printing, Electric Aircraft Engineering, Air Traffic Management, Robotics and Intelligent Systems and Energy Research. These grants enable us to lead novel and breakthrough research collaboration with industry partners. Very importantly, they are also the vehicle for us to contribute towards solving grand challenges, exposing our students to industry relevant issues and, in many cases, involving them in solving the problems as well. We believe that such experiential learning will benefit the students significantly.

Innovation and entrepreneurship are weaved into the fabric of MAE community, many of our students emerged as winners at international competitions and challenges, including Aircraft design competition, 3M Inspire challenge, SCDF innovation challenge, Maritime robotic challenge just to name a few. Some of our faculties have taken their research further and commercialise them through spin-off companies.

We are proud to have top-notch faculty members who have won many accolades and serving as global leaders in their field of research. Our faculty members are also good teachers that support the students and inspire the success of the students.

One of the strengths of our school is the high employability of our graduates. Our students are able to find jobs within 3 months in different industries, both local and international companies. MAE students are also global citizen and future leaders who care about the society and the world around them. For example, we have National Geographic young explorer among our alumni, and our student clubs routinely organize community project to give back to the society. Numerous of our alumni are now in senior positions in their organisations or leaders in their fields.

In summary, our school offers top-quality education, excellent faculty and supportive staff, and top-notch students who are passionate about making a positive impact on the world. We invite you to join us and be part of our vibrant community.
