Building Things That Outlast You: How Bryan Atista Kiely Reimagined Student Leadership

Most student committees measure success by the events they organise.

Bryan Atista Kiely measured it differently.

When the graduating Data Science and Artificial Intelligence (DSAI) student took on the presidency of the Students' Computing and Data Science (SCDS) Club, he began with a simple question: What could a student committee build that would still be useful after it was gone?

That question shaped almost everything his team would go on to do.

"I felt student organisations put too much emphasis on one-time events," Bryan reflects. While such events certainly had their place, he believed student clubs could also create something more enduring - initiatives that were, in his words, "universal and continuous": useful to all students and valuable long after any single committee had completed its term.

That philosophy found its clearest expression in PYPHub, an AI-powered platform developed to help students prepare for examinations. More than simply providing access to past-year papers, the platform offers AI-generated sample answers while giving students a shared space to discuss questions and learn from one another.

When the platform launched, the response exceeded expectations.

Within days, more than a thousand students had signed up.

"My team and I received many positive messages and reactions from students," Bryan recalls. More memorable still was hearing from fellow students who said the platform had inspired them to become more involved in building technology for the CCDS community themselves.

But PYPHub was never intended to stand alone.

Guided by the same philosophy, Bryan and his fellow student leaders introduced a merchandise store celebrating the different computing disciplines, upgraded the club's website and modernised the club's constitution to better support future student leaders and new interest groups. He also co-founded the CCDS Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning (AIML) Club, creating a dedicated community for students keen to explore AI beyond the classroom.

Looking back, Bryan is quick to correct any impression that these achievements were his alone.

"Please do not create the impression that PYPHub is mainly my work," he says.

Instead, he credits teammates including Jeremy Nathan Jusuf, Joshua Adrian Cahyono and many others whose technical expertise transformed ideas into working products. His own role, he says, was to champion the vision, bring together talented people and create the conditions for them to succeed.

"The implementation success of the project is a team effort."

That appreciation for collaboration was hard-earned.

Bryan still remembers arriving at NTU and feeling intimidated by classmates he regarded as exceptionally talented. Determined simply not to fall behind, he worked relentlessly through his first semester and was stunned to achieve a perfect GPA. Yet that early success also taught him an equally important lesson.

"The seed of one's failure is usually sown in the heights of one's success."

Overconfidence led him to take on more commitments than he could realistically sustain, affecting both his studies and his contributions to student activities. The experience forced him to become more thoughtful about balancing ambition with responsibility - a lesson that would shape his leadership in the years that followed.

As Bryan graduates, the software platforms, student communities and governance changes he helped establish will continue to evolve under future student leaders.

For him, however, the real achievement lies elsewhere.

"Personally, I am proud to have had the conviction to run for the SCDS Club presidency and inspire my friends to run alongside me and make a positive impact."

It is a philosophy that extends beyond university. Looking ahead, Bryan hopes to contribute to technology that creates long-lasting solutions to real-world problems - continuing a journey that began not with building software, but with asking how to build something that would outlast himself.
