CML Speaker Series
This lecture invites students and faculty on a captivating journey into the heart of Portuguese literature by exploring the fascinating heteronymic universe of Fernando Pessoa. Far beyond traditional pseudonyms, Pessoa crafted entirely distinct literary personalities, most notably Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, Álvaro de Campos, and Bernardo Soares, each with their own biographical backgrounds, writing styles, philosophical outlooks, and worldviews. By examining these diverse voices, the session delves into deep existential questions, the complexities of human identity, and the far-reaching influence of Portuguese Modernism on global culture.
The gathering encourages an open, interactive atmosphere where participants can ask questions and discuss Pessoa's enduring literary legacy together. To enrich the experience, a temporary pop-up display will be featured right outside the venue on campus. Attendees can browse a specially curated catalogue of bilingual (Portuguese/English) and English editions of classic Portuguese literary works alongside select titles from Shantarin’s catalogue, offering direct access to these foundational texts for anyone eager to explore further.
