Dean's Distinguished Speaker Series - AI for Social Sciences: Generative Modelling Beyond LLMs

AI for Social Sciences- Generative Modeling Beyond LLMs
04 Jun 2025 06.30 PM - 09.00 PM Gaia Auditorium, Nanyang Business School Industry/Academic Partners, Public

AI today isn’t just about language models — it’s about solving complex problems using goal-driven algorithms and generative modelling. At the upcoming Dean’s Distinguished Speaker Series, Prof. Will Cong will introduce GOALS (Goal-Oriented Algorithms in Large Space), a framework that merges transformer-based reinforcement learning and panel trees to tackle decision-making at scale.

In finance and social science, GOALS can:

  • Optimise and manage investment portfolios
  • Build smarter asset pricing and test portfolios
  • Identify return predictability across economic regimes
  • Support corporate decisions through dynamic, high-dimensional modeling

With GOALS, GenAI can simulate corporate environments where managers with different goals learn and adapt in real time, offering new insights into policy, risk, and strategy. In conversation with Prof. Byoung-Hyoun Hwang, Prof. Cong will also discuss how these tools are reshaping financial theory and data-driven social sciences.
