Welcoming the 1st Committee of the School of Social Sciences Club
The School of Social Sciences (SSS) Club welcomed its first committee on 13 February 2018 with an investiture ceremony held at the HSS Auditorium. Professor Liu Hong, Chair of School of Social Sciences, and guest-of-honour for the evening, gave a short speech before the new committee was introduced.
Prof Liu expressed his gratitude to the outgoing pro tem committee for their service and hard work in laying the groundwork of the setting up of the SSS Club. The Club had worked hard to ensure the continuity in student activities following the reorganisation of School of Humanities and Social Sciences (HSS) into the School of Humanities and School of Social Sciences. One of these activities was the exam welfare day held last semester.
Prof Liu also addressed the new committee members in his speech by asking them to consider what they wanted to achieve as student leaders and what needed to be done to take the School and the students they represent forward. Recognising that they will encounter their fair share of challenges, he hoped that they will not be disheartened by the obstacles they will face, and to remember that the School will support and guide them. “As American President John F. Kennedy said, ‘Leadership and learning are indispensable to each other.’ We only get better and stronger from experience,” Prof Liu added.
Outgoing pro tem committee president, Nicholas Lee (Year 3, Psychology), said a few words as well. He congratulated the new committee and advised them to “look to one another for support” during tough times and capitalise on the chemistry and strong bonds amongst themselves to “drive harder through this semester”. He added that the new committee members have a great opportunity to create something different that distinguishes SSS from other schools.
And before the end of the event, SSS Club’s new president, Lee Hsin Chong (Year 3, Economics), took to the rostrum to acknowledge the strengths of the new committee, and to highlight a main aim of the Club: to build one SSS family. He voiced the Club’s objective in supporting the student body more holistically, such as career support and development, student welfare, and organising more sporting activities and social events. He hoped that they will be successful in creating a community made up of present students and alumni who would always remember the SSS family and readily give back to the School.
