The chasm between millennials and baby boomers has recently come under the spotlight, and taken a new twist after a popular Internet meme becomes the retort of choice for youngsters fed up with the supposedly patronising, outdated and know-it-all ways of their elders. But some experts have warned against labelling the divide as a generational issue, arguing that the reality is much more complex than a matter of young versus old. Asst Prof Walid Jumblatt Abdullah from NTU’s SSS public policy and global affairs programme said that such a notion ‘assumes entire generations are monolithic’, and tend to ‘scapegoat’ those from the boomer generation who suffer from consequences of decisions made by others. He suggested to look at the issues from the elite vs masses, powerful vs powerless and just vs unjust angles instead.
