SSS in the News | Universal welfare and saying ‘no’ to tuition: Teo You Yenn goes On the Record about inequality

For the past four months, the book This Is What Inequality Looks Like by Assoc Prof Teo You Yenn, Head of Sociology at NTU has flown off the shelves of local bookstores, and was even brought up in Parliament. In an interview, Assoc Prof Teo makes suggestions to improve social mobility, including re-examining what is rewarded and what is punished in the education system and whether standardised tests like the PSLE do more harm than good. Her work goes beyond education to examine the impact of the challenges families face and she feels universal welfare is something worth seriously considering even though Singapore’s policies are largely geared towards self-reliance.
