Tan Kong Yam, an economics professor from NTU, said the core of the trade war between China and US was a technological competition, that would in turn impact the military competition between the two powers on the world stage. Tan commented that China will not give up on the strategic plan “Made in China 2025”. As such, the tensions between China and US could come to a compromise in the short term but the root of the conflict will persist. He said the North Korea issue would be a trump card for China in the trade negotiations with US as China is able to influence North Korea.
