​SSS in the News | Singapore and Singaporeans lose when universities chase after world rankings

A focus on chasing after university rankings, and therefore prioritising research over teaching, has detrimental effects for Singapore students and society, says Asst Prof Woo Jun Jie from NTU’s Public Policy and Global Affairs Programme in a commentary. The article mentions that, in the latest iteration of the Times Higher Education World Rankings, NUS lost its top spot as Asia’s number 1 university and fell one spot to be ranked 23rd, while NTU was placed at 51st. Asst Prof Woo says that the impressive rise of NUS and NTU on these global university rankings has been due to devoting extensive amounts of resources towards boosting research outcomes, and discusses what this means for teaching and learning in the two universities.
