With almost a third of the People’s Action Party’s (PAP) Central Executive Committee making way for new blood, political analysts expect the fourth generation (4G) leadership to take up most of the key positions left vacant. Five senior positions — chairman, vice-chairman, first and second assistant secretary-generals, as well as treasurer — will see new faces, and the spotlight is on the second-in-command posts which may be an indication of the identity of Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s successor. NTU Asst Prof Woo Jun Jie feels that PM Lee could “keep an old hand on board” and appoint Mr K Shanmugam as one of the two assistant secretary-generals. The 4G leader who takes on the assistant secretary-general role will then likely become PM, he said.
