Singapore’s economy had a 4.3 per cent growth in the first quarter this year, and as the Monetary Authority of Singapore expects the economy to grow at a stable pace, it will allow a slight appreciation of the value of the Singapore dollar. Assoc Prof Yip Sau Leung from the Economics Division at NTU’s School of Social Sciences said, “If it (a trade war between US and China) really develops, the global economy would go down and it would impact on the growth of the global economy, including Singapore. For example, trade may be reduced.” Assoc Prof Yip said, “Now, there is sign of some recovery in the (Singapore) economy, with slight inflation. This is a normalisation process, which means our Singapore dollar is appreciating in value gradually.”
