Abstract
In this lecture, Dr. Cohen will be sharing about the diagnosis and treatment of depressive and anxiety disorders such as Depression, Anxiety Disorder, Bipolar Depression and Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). In addition to professional treatment such as medication and therapies, he will be sharing how families and friends can help patients who are suffering from these disorders. Dr. Cohen will also talk about some of the lessons he have learned from his personal experiences in treating patients. Lastly, the lecture will conclude with a discussion on the promising areas for mental health research and treatment such as the use of Psychopharmaco Genetics, Digital Technology and Brain Imaging.
Biography
Dr. Elliot S. Cohen, M.D. is a Diplomate of the American Board of Psychiatry and a Life Member of the American Psychiatric Association. His medical degree was obtained at the University of Maryland School of Medicine in 1968, and his psychiatric residency was obtained at the same institution in 1975. He is currently in private practice in Colorado Springs, Colorado and specializes in psychiatric medication for an adult population, with emphasis on mood disorders and opiate addiction.
His professional background includes classical training in psychodynamic oriented psychotherapy. In addition, he is formally trained in medical hypnosis for treatment of psychosomatic disorders. His leadership ventures include developing and directing inpatient alcohol treatment centres, establishing drug rehabilitation programs, founding a multispecialty treatment centre for chronic pain, and directing a five-bed inpatient centre for pain.
Dr. Cohen has been active in his community, volunteering free mental health care at two local charities, and has been voted by his medical peers as one of the best psychiatrists in Colorado Springs in the last five years. He has been President of his local psychiatric society for the past ten years. He currently mentors young mental health professionals and has lectured in many venues, locally and internationally, on diagnosis and treatment of mental disorders. He is considered a charismatic and passionate speaker.
He is a world traveller, with his wife Linda, and is interested and intrigued in reframing mental health therapy to the needs of the local cultures that he visits.
