With the countdown already under way to Taiwan’s presidential election, Beijing has embarked on a campaign of its own. Ian Rowen, an assistant professor at Singapore’s NTU who has studied cross-strait tourism, said Taiwan relied less on tourism than other sectors but the industry had a higher profile. Tourism trade industry associations in Taiwan would likely argue that a change in leadership would benefit the economic outlook, he said.
