In facing a potential US-China trade war, official media in China have been reporting on the resilience of China’s economy. NTU economics professor Prof Tan Kong Yam said that since the US imposed increased tariffs on China from July 2018, the impact on China’s economy is not especially significant. While some exported goods are affected, growth in industrial output value and infrastructure investment in recent months have helped to balance the economy. In other words, an export slowdown hits China less hard as domestic consumption has been increasing its contribution to the economy.
