Those who lie to their children out of convenience may be doing them more harm than good. A study by NTU showed that lies intended to get kids to behave may have lasting effects on their young minds. In a live radio interview, Asst Prof Setoh Peipei from NTU Singapore’s School of Social Sciences, who is the lead author of the study, said being lied to in childhood is related to lying to their parents in adulthood, so how that may happen is that the adults may model the dishonesty of the parents. She hopes to convey the message that parents can lie less, and deliver truths in an age-appropriate, sensitive manner, so that a trusting relationship can be built between parents and children.
