​Bao Te: How to navigate challenges brought about by Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

The impact on employment during the current fourth industrial revolution is greater than the sum of those in the past. In a commentary, Asst Prof Bao Te from NTU SSS suggested three ways to deal with the challenges. First, for government to support higher education as a means to close income gaps. Second, a redesign of the social welfare system, and in particular, pension systems. That is, moving away from labour tax as the income source for social welfare, to a possible ‘employment substitution tax’ on companies instead. Finally, Asst Prof Bao said governments and schools should look at emerging industries like e-sports and live broadcasting seriously, and to work towards better support and regulation for the sector.
