The story explores why the elderly in Singapore are still working and the government’s measures in coping with an ageing population. Chew Soon Beng, a political economics professor at NTU, said, “(Workfare) helps employers pay about 30 per cent of the wages, and we encourage older workers to be working continuously. When they continue to work, they can learn and keep themselves occupied. That is how we deal with the ageing population.”
