Biomedical Analytics and Leading-Edge Technology Workshop by School of Chemistry, Chemical Engineering and Biotechnology (CCEB) | 7 January 2023

CCEB Workshop - PCR

Healthcare is an industry that is fast capitalising on the digital revolution. Doctors, nurses and healthcare professionals are increasingly relying on smart technology, AI and Machine learning functions in diagnosing and treating their patients speedily and accurately. These tools can help healthcare professionals identify anomalies in medical imaging like x-ray, CT scans and MRI and help diagnose accurately and allow patients to receive speedy treatment in event of pandemics and unexpected life-threatening trauma.

In this student-conducted workshop, participants will learn and understand the principles that demonstrate how coding is applied in simple devices like a thermometer to sophisticated devices such as a blood glucose meter and how the coding derives information. Using MATLAB, participants will learn how the code can display Computed tomography (CT) and Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) images and understand the working principles of how CT images are obtained.

Traffic Planning Workshop by School of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) | 7 January 2023

CEE Workshop - Traffic

It is the Industrial Revolution, and you are excited to ride in your new Fiat and you really want everyone to see it!

Conventional wisdom says you take the shortest known route according to the street directory. But you don’t know who else and how many others are planning a similar trip which is going to affect your journey. This is an issue because in traffic planning, information is often crucial to minimise congestion along the roads. For instance, knowing the number of vehicles passing through a route will allow designers to plan traffic signal timing for that route. As cities become smarter, planners and users now have access to more meaningful data to make optimised decisions to make their travel better.

Come join us in our very own Escape Room - Pick Your Path - as we travel through time and witness firsthand the evolution of transportation planning. Collaborate with other participants to optimise your team’s travel time while dealing with a very angry Mother Gaia and her cryptic clues as you try to reverse the harmful consequences of our poor travel decisions. Will you be able to appease her, or will it be too late?

Arduino Workshop by School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) | 7 January 2023

Discover the joy of living in a smart home.

The air conditioning is set to turn on 10 minutes before you arrive home so that you enter a cooling paradise that is your home. Is the evening scorching sun glaring through the windows? Get the curtains reigned in. Does your pet get scared in the dark while home alone? Have the lights switched on and set to dim. Welcome to the smart home of the future.

This is how mechatronics could enable smart city living. This workshop will focus on Arduino which illustrates how we can live in a smart home; it will interface with a toggle switch, a photosensor, and a lightbulb. This will create the effect of a lightbulb that turns on automatically when it gets dark which can also be operated with a manual override. In this workshop, students will build the Arduino circuit, write parts of the code and begin their own mechatronics journey!

Smart Cities Sensors Workshop by School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering (EEE) | 14 January 2023

EEE Workshop - Soldering

The future of smart cities is about letting technology work for us.

Imagine driving in the afternoon, and suddenly rain clouds form and darken the afternoon sky. It starts pouring within seconds. The visibility is suddenly very low and looks like it may be dangerous to drive. But just like that, the streetlights turn on and your car’s headlights come on too. It is safe again to continue your journey.

In this workshop, we will be creating a DIY Light Sensor that participants can take home. The circuit has a sensor that makes the light bulb light up in the dark and turns off in the day. This LDR sensor detects light falling on it and changes its resistance accordingly. This change in resistance of the LDR turns on the LED when light is not falling on the LDR and it turns the LED OFF when light falls on the LDR. Participants will also be getting hands-on experience working with soldering tools and understand the soldering process and technique.

Reinforcement Learning Workshop by School of Computer Science and Engineering (SCSE) and Python Workshop by SenseTime | 14 January 2023

SCSE Workshop - Dofbot

The machines are taking over! Well, not yet but we are heading in that direction. Alexa, Siri, and Hey Google are the basic versions of machine learning. Right now, they can perform simple tasks. But in the near future, they can help us with more advanced tasks.

Imagine playing a game of chess, DOTA, or even Atari against an agent. Or better still, have an agent playing with you against other gamers? What’s an agent, you ask? That’s what you will find out in this workshop.

Reinforcement learning (RL) is an advanced topic in Artificial Intelligence (AI) and has been very popular for the past years, starting with a huge success in video games and board games. Now. RL has been used in many areas, including various control problems like robotics, as RL helps to ease the process of designing the control solution with artificial intelligence. With such public attention, many open-source frameworks and libraries are developing to lower the burden of applying RL in new tasks and new robotics with standard architecture. Understanding RL and how to apply it with robotics application demos can develop an interest in AI.

SenseTime Image 1 SenseTime Image 2

Imagine a future where you can step into a vehicle, tell it where you want to go, and it will bring you to your destination without any other input. Cameras on the car detect traffic signals, and pedestrians, while ultrasonic sensors measure distances from other vehicles and obstacles. All this information is then processed and used to control the vehicle’s acceleration, braking, and steering. Autonomous vehicles are making this all possible, and the future is nearer than you think.

In this workshop, participants with little to no computer programming experience will learn Python programming basics with hands-on experience in controlling a virtual car on SenseStudy, an online AI Education platform by SenseTime. You will learn how basic programming and sensors provide the foundations for more complex autonomous vehicles.

Note: The RL workshop in the morning will be conducted by SCSE students while the Python workshop after lunch will be conducted by SenseTime.
