Augmenting Human Perception and Cognition in Medical XR by Laura Schütz
Abstract:
This talk will present research on medical extended reality aimed at enhancing clinician perception and reasoning. Works investigating how multisensory feedback augments spatial cognition in medical diagnostics and interventions, and how audiovisual congruence improves perception and realism in AR will be discussed. In addition, the talk will introduce adaptive XR interfaces that account for user cognitive load, measured through physiological signals (eye tracking, ECG) and behavioural indicators, to dynamically adjust interface complexity in VR medical training and human-LLM interaction.
About the Speaker:
Laura Schütz is a PhD candidate in Computer Science at TUM, advised by Prof. Nassir Navab. Her research focuses on multisensory interactions in extended reality, with a particular interest in audiovisual perception and sonic interaction design for healthcare applications. In 2025, she was a visiting researcher at the Augmented Perception Lab at CMU's Human-Computer Interaction Institute. She holds an MS in Design from Stanford University (2023) and has published at ACM CHI, IEEE TVCG, IEEE ISMAR, and Nature Scientific Reports. She is a scholarship holder of the German Academic Scholarship Foundation.
