Last month’s heatwave a sign of what is to come

Last month South-east Asia and a large part of the northern hemisphere from Japan to Russia, Europe and North America experienced record high temperatures. Both the intensity and the magnitude of the heatwave has been unusually great, causing droughts, wildfires, serious threat to human health, as well as peaking energy consumption due to the use of air conditioners.

Professor Benjamin Horton explains the forces driving weather patterns in South-East Asia, the mechanisms behind climate change and how large scale heatwaves is consistent with how climate models predict future weather in Singapore and South-East Asia. In the words of Prof. Horton: “Last month was a warning of what we will have to deal with”.
