​Three ASE students win NRF’s Marine Science Research and Development Overseas Programme Award

Congratulations to ASE students Regine Tiong Hui, Winona Wijaya and Eddy Kwoh Zhi Yan, who have each won the MSRDP Overseas Programme Award. The award, which is funded by the National Research Foundation (NRF), “aims to help to encourage more local students to work on marine science research and in turn contribute to the talent development and manpower training in this area”. It give the opportunity for students to carry out an applied project, internship or study program abroad within the following themes: marine ecosystems and biodiversity (MEB), environment impact and monitoring (EIM), coastal ecological engineering (CEE) and marine technology and platforms (MTP).

Eddy Kwoh Zhi Yan received his award to carry out a research project at the Institute of Oceanography at National Taiwan University in Tapei, Taiwan. The research involves modelling responses of zooplankton communities in the East China Sea to environmental changes. The study will help understand responses of these key organisms in the marine food web to future changes in environmental parameters such as temperature, nutrient availability, pH, etc.

Regine Tiong Hui has received her award to go to Cyprus, where she will be involved in research on the biology and ecology of sea turtles. Within the Marine Turtle Conservation Project, she will specifically be collecting data to study green and loggerhead turtles. This project has been running for more than 25 years and continues as a collaboration between the Society for the Protection of turtles (SPOT), the University of Exeter’s Marine Turtle Research Group and North Cyprus Department for Environmental Protection.

Winona Wijaya received her award to go University of Technology Sydney, Australia, to learn how to model species distribution of marine plankton. She will be studying the structure of microbial communities in the water column to see how they vary over space and time in response to environmental changes.
