Research Focus

Digital Media, Culture, and Society

This research focus explores how digital technologies shape and are shaped by social, cultural, and political dynamics across diverse global contexts. It encompasses investigations into AI in creative industries (Prof Pei Sze Chow), UX and human-computer interaction (Prof Kwan Min Lee), and digital inclusion and accessibility (Asst Prof Victor Zhuang). Researchers in this area examine how digital media influences identity, labour, and participation—especially in Asia and the Global South—while addressing broader questions of equity, ethics, and innovation in digital transformation.

Communication, Governance, and Policy

This area addresses the legal, institutional, and societal implications of communication technologies and media systems. Scholars like Prof Ang Peng Hwa contribute insights into media regulation, internet governance, and digital policy across Asia and beyond. This theme also encompasses studies on information access (Assoc Prof Brendan Luyt) and the development of inclusive regulatory frameworks that shape media practices, public discourse, and civic engagement in both local and global contexts.

Creative Technologies and Storytelling

This focus area brings together research on digital storytelling, screen cultures, and user-centered media design. It includes cinematic and interactive media forms, as studied by Dr Kym Campbell, Dr Kevin Chew, and Dr Ian Dixon, and considers the evolving nature of narrative and audience engagement. Whether through film, television, or emerging platforms, this research explores how creative expression is influenced by technological shifts and cultural change.

Inclusive Media and Accessibility

With increasing attention to equity and representation, this research area centers on how media can foster inclusivity for marginalized communities. Asst Prof Victor Zhuang’s work in disability communication and Dr Pei Sze Chow’s research into the impact of AI on creative labour highlight efforts to understand and improve accessibility, diversity, and participation in digital and cultural spaces. This theme bridges technology, communication, and social justice, pushing forward inclusive media practices and policies.
