Dr. Duan is a professor with the School of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science , Peking University. He received the Ph.D. (2007) from The University of Newcastle, Australia, the M.S. (2002) in Computer Science from the National University of Singapore, Singapore, and the M.S. (1999) in Automation from the University of Science and Technology of China, China, respectively. During the Ph.D. study, he worked on broadcast video analytics. After that, he turned to image retrieval. He joined the Institute of Digital Media (IDM), Peking University, as an associate professor in 2008. Dr. Duan is leading an IMage REtrieval group (IMRE) with IDM. Before that, he was a research scientist with the Institute for Infocomm Research (Singapore) from 2003 to 2008. The IMRE group is mainly focused on visual search engine. Most of his contributions are focused on mobile visual search techniques that use a camera phone to initiate image queries about objects/scenes, and transmit compressed images or compact descriptors to the remote server to perform a visual search, through which the results are eventually sent back to the mobile phone. As an editor and a major contributor, he works on MPEG Compact Descriptors for Visual Search, standardizing techniques that will enable efficient and interoperable design of visual search applications.
