Three-dimensional printing (3DP) or additive manufacturing (AM) technology is used for on-demand manufacturing of both patient-matched and generic implants. Establishing structure-process-property performance relationships for different AM techniques is vital to implement them in biomedical and other applications. We aim to understand the relationships between processing conditions, geometry, porosity, and composition on resulting mechanical and application-dependent properties. Calcium phosphate (CaP), being compositionally similar to natural bone, we use CaP bioceramic systems in 3DP scaffolds and coatings on Ti metallic devices to study their physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological properties in load-bearing and low-load-bearing applications. AM of ceramics poses a different set of critical issues, making multifunctional patient-specific bone grafts in specific clinical scenarios more challenging. Natural medicinal compounds (NMCs) loading on those CaP scaffolds and coatings shows improved osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and controlled drug release kinetics. The presentation will address the design of 3DP ceramic and composite scaffolds and surface-modified load-bearing Titanium implants for patient-specific orthopaedic and dental devices, critical issues we have faced, and challenges we envision. | ||
