Seminar Abstract

Three-dimensional printing (3DP) or additive manufacturing (AM) technology is used for on-demand manufacturing of both patient-matched and generic implants. Establishing structure-process-property performance relationships for different AM techniques is vital to implement them in biomedical and other applications. We aim to understand the relationships between processing conditions, geometry, porosity, and composition on resulting mechanical and application-dependent properties. Calcium phosphate (CaP), being compositionally similar to natural bone, we use CaP bioceramic systems in 3DP scaffolds and coatings on Ti metallic devices to study their physical, chemical, mechanical, and biological properties in load-bearing and low-load-bearing applications. AM of ceramics poses a different set of critical issues, making multifunctional patient-specific bone grafts in specific clinical scenarios more challenging. Natural medicinal compounds (NMCs) loading on those CaP scaffolds and coatings shows improved osteogenesis, angiogenesis, and controlled drug release kinetics. The presentation will address the design of 3DP ceramic and composite scaffolds and surface-modified load-bearing Titanium implants for patient-specific orthopaedic and dental devices, critical issues we have faced, and challenges we envision.

Speaker's Biography 

Susmita Bose is a Westinghouse Distinguished Chair Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University (WSU), where her research focuses on additive manufacturing and 3D printing of biomaterials, titanium surface modification for orthopaedic and dental applications, and natural medicine. She received her BS with Chemistry Honors from Kalyani University, India, MS from IIT Kanpur, and PhD in Physical Organic Chemistry from Rutgers University. She is a Fellow of AAAS, NAI, MRS, ASM International, AIMBE, ACerS, and RSC, and serves on the Board of Directors of the Washington State Academy of Sciences. Her honours include the NSF CAREER/PECASE Award, presented at the White House by the US President, and the 2026 Sahlin Eminent Faculty Award, WSU’s highest faculty honour. Prof. Bose has supervised approximately 50 graduate students and published over 350 technical articles and 13 patents in Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and Bioengineering, with over 47,000 citations and an h-index of 108 (Google Scholar). Her research on 3D-printed bone tissue engineering scaffolds and natural medicine has received international media coverage, including from AP, BBC, NPR, CBS News, MSNBC, ABC News, and ScienceDaily.
