Seminar Abstract

Casting, forging, rolling, machining, and welding have shaped metals for centuries. Additive manufacturing (AM), or metal 3D printing, marks a fundamental shift from these traditional methods. Metal AM is widely regarded as one of the most significant advances in modern manufacturing since the Industrial Revolution. Much of the excitement stems from the design freedom it offers. Engineers can create complex, topology-optimized structures that would be difficult or impossible to manufacture otherwise. However, as metallurgists have long understood, properties depend not only on composition but also on processing and resulting microstructure. AM introduces a new dimension to this relationship. Over the past three decades, we have primarily worked on AM for structural and biomedical applications. We have designed new alloys and manufactured parts with compositional and functional gradation using metal AM. This presentation will focus on the impact of metal AM on various applications, emerging opportunities, and current challenges.

Speaker's Biography 

Amit Bandyopadhyay is a Boeing Distinguished Chair Professor in the School of Mechanical and Materials Engineering at Washington State University. His research focuses on additive manufacturing and 3D printing, particularly alloy design, multi-material structures, and bone implants. He has mentored 25 PhD and 35 MS students, as well as postdoctoral researchers, visiting faculty, and over 50 undergraduate students, and has authored more than 425 technical articles, edited 12 books, and holds 21 issued patents. His honours include the NSF CAREER Award and Office of Naval Research Young Investigator Program (YIP) Award. He is a Fellow of MRS, American Ceramic Society, ASM, AIMBE, AAAS, SME, and NAI, and an elected member of the Washington State Academy of Sciences. He serves as Editor-in-Chief of the *International Journal of Applied Ceramic Technology*, Associate Editor of *Virtual and Physical Prototyping*, Section Editor-in-Chief of *Digital Manufacturing*, and was previously Executive Editor-in-Chief of the *International Journal of Extreme Manufacturing*. His work has received over 49,000 citations, with an h-index of 112 (Google Scholar).
