Seminar Abstract

After Lehman Brothers’ bankruptcy in 2008, the subprime mortgage crisis led to a severe economic collapse. The Obama administration’s first major task was to revive the economy, prompting an analysis by the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST). Their findings pointed to the decline of U.S. manufacturing, driven by offshoring, as the root cause. Recognizing manufacturing as the foundation of economic strength, the U.S. government launched aggressive policies to restore it. This seminar will discuss the background, emphasize the importance of manufacturing, and consider the potential impact of these U.S. policies on our country.

 

Speaker's Biography 

After earning a Ph.D. at UC Berkeley, Dr Min went to Japan as a special professor at Keio University. He returned to the US for a medical venture opportunity. He joined DTL Corporation (DMG Mori’s US R&D) to develop an ultra-precision 5-axis nano machine. He worked for Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory as a staff scientist. Finally, he is currently working at the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Wisconsin-Madison as an associate professor with researching ultra-precision machining, smart sustainable manufacturing, and manufacturing for design.
