Seminar Abstract

Presented in this talk are recent advances in AI agents using sound based sensing and digital twin technologies for smart manufacturing systems. The talk will highlight Purdue’s research on stethoscope based sound sensing platforms that use AI agents and foundation models to analyze machine operation status, process performance, real time anomaly detection, and intelligent diagnostics in manufacturing environments. The presentation will discuss how sound AI agents can continuously interpret subtle changes in machine behavior and interact with digital twins that model manufacturing processes, equipment conditions, and operational data flows. By combining industrial IoT infrastructure, multimodal sensing, robotics, and AI driven analytics, these systems enable digital-physical teaming between human operators, autonomous agents, and cyber physical manufacturing systems. Examples from smart manufacturing and intelligent automation applications will demonstrate how AI agents and digital twins can collaborate to support real-time visualization, autonomous monitoring, and resilient manufacturing operations for future Industry 4.0 ecosystems.

 

Speaker's Biography 

Dr. Martin Jun is a Professor in the School of Mechanical Engineering at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, USA. He serves as the Director of the Center of Operation and Research for Industry Advancement (CORIA), Director of the CORIA Consortium, Director of the JBNU-Purdue Research Institute (JPRI), Co-Director of ManuFuture Consoritum, and Co-Director of the Smart Manufacturing Innovation Center (SMIC) at Purdue. He received his BSc and MASc degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, Canada, in 1998 and 2000, respectively. He earned his PhD in 2005 from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in the Department of Mechanical Science and Engineering. He has authored over 190 peer-reviewed journal publications. He is a Fellow of ASME and serves as an Area Editor for the Journal of Manufacturing Processes. His accolades include the 2011 SME Outstanding Young Manufacturing Engineer Award, the 2012 I.W. Smith Award for Outstanding Achievements from the Canadian Society of Mechanical Engineers, the 2015 Damwoo .
