Abstract:

This speech uses the archives of Overseas Chinese Property Loss Registration Form, which was registered by the Kuomintang Government of China after WWII, and local material to explore the development of the Chinese economy during the Pacific War in the Rajang River basin. Under Japanese military rule, the model of Chinese economy was forced to transform to meet Japanese military demands. Chinese businesses in the Rajang River basin suffered heavily, with only small workshops and retail businesses surviving. Harsh duties and forced labour severely damaged Chinese businesses and was made worse by the Japanese military government intentionally manipulating ethnic relations.
