AIFE 2025 - Educating for an Intelligent Future, Opening Keynote by Prof Joseph Sung, Director - C-AIM held on 18-20 Nov 2025

Professor Joseph Sung called on educators to rethink teaching in an AI-shaped world. Using examples from medical training, he argued that while AI can deliver fast, correct answers, it may weaken deeper understanding—raising the question of what knowledge still matters, and what should no longer be taught as “memorisation.”

He highlighted the promise of personalised learning at scale, but warns of “moral outsourcing” if education relies too heavily on machines. In a future where AI can automate many tasks, educators and clinicians must double down on what technology cannot replace: integrity, empathy, critical thinking, sound judgment, and the ability to ask the right questions.

Drawing from Socratic philosophy and real clinical experience, he concluded that human values, trust, and dignity remain central. AI may transform roles—but teachers and doctors will stay essential as mentors, guides, and moral anchors for the next generation.

The 2nd AI for Education Singapore (AIFE) conference was organised by Nanyang Technological University and supported by NVIDIA. Over three action-packed days, the conference brought together global thought leaders, cutting-edge innovations, and inspiring showcases to explore and discuss the critical dimensions of learning in a future shaped by AI.
