A Collaborative Ecosystem
The Research Centre for Residue and Toxic Industrial Waste Management, also known as TREASURES (Towards Resource Efficiency And Sustainability for URban EnvironmentS), is a joint initiative established by Nanyang Technological University (NTU) and the National Environment Agency (NEA).
TREASURES serves as a central hub for innovation, dedicated to driving advancements in the waste management sector through a collaborative facility approach and targeted grant calls.
We actively foster an ecosystem of partnerships by engaging with Institutes of Higher Learning (IHLs) and industry leaders, and establishing international institutional alliances.
With Singapore’s Semakau Landfill projected to reach capacity by 2035, TREASURES addresses this pressing challenge by advancing sustainable waste management technologies and establishing reliable benchmarks for the safe repurposing of residue and toxic industrial waste.
Core Objectives
Vision
To pioneer sustainable waste management technologies and establish reliable benchmarks and standards for the safe repurposing of industrial waste.
Mission
To transform Semakau Landfill from a permanent disposal site into a Zero‑Waste Transit, Storage and Processing Hub (TSPH) by 2050.
Message from Co-Directors
At TREASURES, we are reimagining waste as a valuable resource — driving innovation, circularity, and sustainable solutions to help Singapore build a resilient zero-waste future.
Our Research Focus
To achieve the centre's vision, our research and operations are structured across four dedicated research nodes:
Node 1: Waste Flow & Analytics
Develops advanced data analytics and predictive models to track waste flows, optimise disposal systems, and uncover resource recovery opportunities in Singapore.
Learn moreNode 2: Landfill Transformation
Develops innovative engineering solutions to excavate, treat, and repurpose landfilled materials, extending landfill lifespan and enabling sustainable reuse.
Learn moreNode 3: Toxic Industrial Waste (TIW) Solutions
Develops advanced low-energy treatment technologies to safely detoxify toxic industrial waste and protect environmental and public health.
Learn moreNode 4: Risk Assessments & Standards
Provides scientific validation through impact assessments, toxicity monitoring, and safety benchmarks to ensure repurposed waste materials are safe for use.
