Mid-Autumn Party | A Fun-Filled Moonlit Night at NTUpreneur

Written by: Chen Jingwen (MSc TIP AY25-26)

For many of us, this was our first Mid-Autumn Festival away from home. We expected a quiet night in, maybe just a video call to family. But NTUpreneur turned that evening into something far more memorable, a true “Chinese-style carnival” celebration on campus that brought us together through food, games, culture, and new moments of connection.

As the saying goes, “Tonight is full of joy, with the bright moon and gentle breeze as company.”

Lanterns, Mooncakes, and Togetherness

The festive atmosphere greeted us from the entrance: red lanterns hung high, Mid-Autumn decorations were all around, and the sign-in desk quickly became a popular photo spot.

The evening began with a warm dinner, during which students shared food and laughter. A highlight came when Dr Xia Zhiqiang, Deputy Director of Academic Learning at NTUpreneur, personally cut open the mooncakes, filling the room with the sweet symbolism of reunion and togetherness. A big group photo followed, with our smiles shining as brightly as the full moon.

Ancient Traditions with a Modern Twist

Four interactive booths brought classic Mid-Autumn traditions to life in fun, hands-on ways:

  • Fan Painting: Students designed their own fans with moon, jade rabbit, and NTU-themed art. The 20 limited-edition fans quickly became the most sought-after keepsakes of the night.

  • Pitch-Pot: Laughter and cheers erupted as participants tossed arrows into jars, testing focus and skill in this traditional game to symbolise the blessing of good fortune.

  • Fishing for the Moon: Using chopsticks, players raced against a 60-second countdown to catch as many floating “moon balls” as possible. The one with the highest catch walked away with a prize; the challenge sparked laughter and cheers through healthy competition.

  • Ring Toss: With tasty treats to exciting prizes up for grabs, this booth was a crowd favourite! The loudest cheers erupted when someone landed a ring on the spinning blades of an electric fan, a thrilling highlight of the game.

Riddles Under the Moonlight

The Lantern Riddle Contest was the night’s main event. Before the game, the host introduced Mid-Autumn traditions, bringing everyone into the festive spirit. Dr Xia then shared a heartfelt message, encouraging students to cherish the joy of reunion and stay connected no matter where they are.

Teams then competed to solve riddles of varying difficulty, from Mid-Autumn traditions to NTU campus-related ones, filling the room with laughter and playful shouts. The winning team proudly received their prize from Alan Ho, Assistant Manager of Graduate Programmes at NTUpreneur, bringing the contest to a celebratory close.

Warmth Across Cultures

As the event came to a close, every student received mooncakes and small gifts, a final gesture of warmth.

In China, Mid-Autumn may be just another holiday. But here in NTUpreneur, this thoughtful event, organised by fellow MSc TIP students and supported by staff, wasn’t just about culture; it was about community.

We didn’t just observe tradition; We created a shared experience.

Though far from home, no one felt alone. Thanks to NTUpreneur, we found connection, comfort, and a true sense of belonging.

We are already looking forward to the next festival!
