Meet our MSc TIP alumnus, Lee Yu Te!

Lee Yu Te, MSc Technopreneurship and Innovation Programme (Class of 2022)

Lee Yu Te, MSc TIP Class of 2022, shared with us about how the curriculum has given him a boost; knowledge and skill-wise. The programme also provided him with the necessary resources and guidance, like an actual mentorship. He shares the importance of consistent research and his aim of joining a Fintech start-up after graduation.

What kickstarted your interest in entrepreneurship?
In college, I participated in entrepreneurial competitions in various cities such as Shanghai and Beijing. Through that experience, I began to have a strong interest in entrepreneurship.

How has your MSc TIP experience been?
What impressed me the most about MSc TIP would be the professors. They were different from the lecturers I have had, as well as the curriculum planned. The TIP professors are entrepreneurs or equipped with industrial experiences. Through their extensive experience, they allow us to obtain first-hand resources and knowledge, which can be directly used in business or daily life. They are like actual mentors to us.

What insights have you gained from MSc TIP?
During these months, what gave me the most insight was the ‘Venture Financing’ course. Over the semester, I have received so many resources related to the core of venture financing, such as financing negotiations, due diligence, valuation and investment term sheet. Furthermore, through actual simulation exercises, we could gain a more in-depth understanding of the relationship between entrepreneurs and investors. This would allow me to better assist startups with venture valuation and financing negotiations.

What advice would you have for students interested in this field?
Apart from having sophisticated hard skills like evaluation, negotiations, one should also be equipped with soft skills such as being able to pitch effectively. Always research on what venture capitalists look for in startups. Next, it is essential to keep yourself up to date with the latest trends about Blockchain, AI, and more.

What’s next for your journey as an entrepreneur?
Upon graduation, I would like to join a Fintech startup; perhaps as a Business Development manager. This would allow me to apply the theories while familiarising myself with the different stages of startup development, such as fundraising (A/B round or ICO) for the SEED rounds.

For students like Yu Te, who have a clear goal in mind and see the importance of balancing both hard and soft skills, learn more about our programmes as we continue to cultivate entrepreneurship with a multidisciplinary approach and foster the diversity of ideas.
